MOSCOW, December 22. /tass/. The State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots at a meeting on Wednesday supported Boris Gryzlov's candidacy for the post of Russian ambassador to Belarus. This was reported to TASS by a source familiar with the meeting.
"The issue was considered behind closed doors. Yes, they supported it," he said, answering a question about the decision taken by the committee.
Gryzlov, former speaker of the State Duma, chairman of the Supreme Council of United Russia, is currently Russia's plenipotentiary representative in the contact group on the settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine.
At the moment, the post of Russian ambassador to Belarus is occupied by Evgeny Lukyanov.
According to the regulations of the State Duma, the relevant committees participate in consultations during the appointment and recall by the President of the Russian Federation of diplomatic representatives in foreign states and international organizations. Ambassadors are appointed by the President of the Russian Federation on the recommendation of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
